Mt. Rainier & Puyallup - October 14 & 15, 2000...
Just returned from my 1st trip with "Meneer Bus". Left Saturday to Mt. Rainier and camped there at the Sunshine Point Campground. The bus drove fine (60-65 mph on the high way and up the mountain in 3rd and sometimes 4th gear - not a problem). The campsite was nice but very very cold (37F), and since the bus has no heater it was just the two of us to keep it warm. Eventually we had a good night sleep, but the 1st few hours were brrrrr. Sunday morning we drove all the way up to the visitor point on Mt.Rainier (Paradise point). Again the bus went up the hill like a mountain goat (all the way in
3rd gear). On top the weather was beautiful and we had a great view. Around 13:00 we left for Puyallup because we were curious about the Oktobugfest and were hoping to meet some other Wetwesties. Arrived at the fairground around 15:00. Saw a lot of buses (but didn't know which ones were Wetwesties) and had a look inside. I was hoping to find a central console for the bus, but couldn't find one. Inside were a lot of nice
VW's, a few buses, a lot of Bugs and Rabbits. After walking around for an hour or so, we went outside and wandered around the parkinglot for a while. Again a lot of Bugs, buses and other VW's for sale. We saw a few real nice buses (mainly splitties). It's amazing to see how people have restored these cars to their original state when they left the showroom 30 years ago (or even better probably). At 16:30 we left Puyallup to drive back to Portland and arrived safely in Portland around 19:00. Just in time to quickly run down to the local Chevies for 2 Corona's and some real nice Mexican food.
The bus started to make a bit more noise on the way back (it needs an oil refresh and probably some other engine TLC - gonna phone the mechanic this week - I'm not capable of doing that myself - yet!).
All in all we had a nice weekend, but didn't meet any Wetwesties (but more opportunities will surely come).
